Hans Coper, Pottery Inspiration #1

So I start my pottery classes this Sunday, and I've been studying the greats such as Lucie Rie, Sarah Walton and Hans Coper.  The pieces above are all Hans' elegant work.  If only I can throw clay the way he was able to.  He had such an amazing eye for detail, and his style was beyond!  I'm getting a little nervous for my classes, I just hope I can make a simple bowl or cylinder and not have the clay collapse.  I'll keep you all posted!  Wish me luck.

X- Ray for Art

"We live in a world obsessed with image.  what we look like, what our clothes look like, houses, cars...I like to counter this obsession with superficial appearance by using X-rays to strip back the layers and show what it is like under the surface.  Often the integral beauty adds intrigue to the familiar.  We all make assumptions based on the external visual aspects of what surrounds us and we are attracted to people and forms that are aesthetically pleasing.  I like to challenge this automatic way that we react to just physical appearance by highlighting the, often surprising, inner beauty." - Nick Veasey.

I love Nick's art work!  So graphic, simple, and mysterious.  Large pieces like these would be perfect in a contemporary space with white lacquered walls and a few traditional pieces here and there...

Lifting the Curtain on Design

I enjoy Vicente Wolf's coffee table books, his third one "Lifting The Curtain On Design"  I'm sure will just be as great as his past two, "Crossing Boundaries" and "Learning To See"  In these books you'll find that Vicente is not only a talented designer but also a great photographer.  Most, if not all images in the books are photographed by him.
Hitting the shelves on October 19.

Sexy Fruit

The Coco De Mer Nut is stunningly beautiful.  From the islands off the east coast of Africa, the largest seed in the plant kingdom resembles females hips and private bits.  It weighs up to 60 pounds and can be as wide as 24"!  Even though It is very difficult to obtain one of these I wanted to post about them anyway.  Aesthetically, they are so gorgeous and would look great as a piece of art in an interior space.  I know! I have this thing with incorporating objects from nature into interior decor.  Ironically the Coco De Mer is from a female flower while the male flower looks like this

I mean REALLY?  Come on.  You got to love mother nature!!

Rue

Rue, The new online Interior Design Magazine just released their first issue this month!  While Metropolitan Home and several other design magazines has ceased publications in the past year, the online publication world is flourishing. The creators of the magazine, Lonny tapped into the world of the internet this past year which is showing lots of success.  Others are following the trend. The new kid on the block is Rue magazine.  I am going to miss my one day a week routine of cozying up on my sofa with a cup of tea, a pile of magazines in front of me flipping through pages of fashion, design and art. Sigh....Cie la vie

Terestchenko Captures Truth

The extremely talented Ivan Terestchenko photographs Manolo Blahnik's space.  Ivan's work is nothing short of perfection.  I love getting lost in his photographs studying every single detail in them.  He finds the angles and light of the spaces beautifully, and he knows how to tell stories by capturing truth through his lens.

Pontifell on Bookends

“Bookends are meant to perform a real function,” Luke Ives Pontifell says of Thornwillow Press “When a book is allowed to lean on an angle like a flying buttress, to keep the rest of the shelf of books from falling over, it becomes vulnerable. Eventually, the book will deform and become permanently lopsided, the spine is likely to break and crack, and the pages are then likely to fall out.” From NY Times article

Luke has inspired me to sell bookends on Kerut Home.  Stay tuned!
