Chock-Full Of Curiosities

It's no surprise that I like interesting curiosities, objects, and odd collections. I guess this is why I absolutely love Toddy Selby's photography of peoples interesting work and living spaces. The creative Vincente Darre's home is completely full of his own whimsical semi dark little treats.  Happy Halloween everyone!!

Julian Stair, Pottery inspiration #5

I have now made 8 bowls/vessels in pottery.  Yesterday, I failed at creating a vase, I guess the clay was too wet, and I was too excited.  Throwing takes a huge amount of patience, breathing, and focus.  Tomorrow I go in on studio day to attempt my vase again.  I'm addicted and it's all I think about these days!  I just want to make pottery.  Another inspiration is Julian Stair.  As you can see his pieces are simplistic, and modern.  I adore.

Go Gloss

High gloss painted walls add so much drama to interiors.  It's a very smart way to jazz up your space while keeping the cost down.  Glossy finishes are especially ideal for bathroom walls, since the finish allows for easy clean up with a damp sponge or cloth.  If you feel inspired to take on a project like this yourself, be sure your walls are patched and as smooth as possible because any bump or imperfection will be magnified by the gloss and reflection. Also use a very good quality brand paint.  However, I recommend hiring a professional to tackle this job and ask if they would spray the walls instead of brush and roller.  This technique is the most effective in delivering that look of shiny glass!  Go gloss for drama, glamor and sophistication.

Archaeology

Plumbing parts, steel fragments, bolts, bones, bits and pieces. Stacked, broken and upright...these are the amazing still life photographs of Irving Penn made between 1979 and 1980.  The platinum photographs have rarely been seen, but will be on exhibit beginning October 28th through January 18th. at Pace/MacGill Gallery.  I am very much looking forward to viewing Irving Penn's cabinet of curiosities!

The Cloisters

Vintage Postcard of the Cloisters from 1964

I finally made my way up to the Cloisters this past week, and was thoroughly impressed with my visit.  As I roamed through the corridors of the medieval French architecture I was charmed by the ancient objects and art work that line the hand carved stone walls.  All of this in New York!

The branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened in 1938 as “the crowning achievement of American museology.”  The museum’s main structures are portions of five medieval French cloisters, along with several other European monuments.

Amazed by the achievement of transporting these massive stone edifices to the west, I was equally impressed with collections from the Romanesque and Gothic periods along with the beautiful gardens that surround the Cloisters.  Perched on a hill top overlooking the Hudson River, a small piece of Ancient Europe in New York City...heaven.
